The Crown Estate announces Round 3 offshore wind development partners
The Crown Estate has today announced the successful bidders for each of the nine Round 3 offshore wind zones within UK waters. The expansion of electricity generation from offshore wind represents a massive long term investment opportunity which has the potential to generate thousands of jobs in the UK as well as securing a marine renewable electricity source. Round 3 offshore wind energy generation aims to deliver a quarter of the UKs total electricity needs by 2020.
Former Vestas Employees get Second Wind with Opening of New Sureblades Factory
Article by Harvey Mcewan
The closure of Danish wind giant Vestas was a major blow to the low carbon industries, and served to undermine the government's pledge to support such companies. However, almost one year on, three former employees have embarked upon their new venture - Sureblades - just metres from the Vestas factory.
600 people were employed by the world's largest wind energy firm when the closure of the Vestas factory took place, around 425 of whom were made redundant. However, three of those people have opened the doors to their new blade manufacturer business, Sureblades.
The company is depending upon the production of a 100% recyclable blade, which they are working on alongside a team at Southampton University. Already, an order has been placed by Irish energy firm C&F Green Energy for 1,000 blades.
The blades differ in their capacity to be melted down at the end of their shelf-life and used in the creation of new blades. This is far preferable to the burning of the old blades, or simply sending them to landfill sites.
The company, situated on the same estate as the former Vestas site in Newport, hopes to employ around 40 new staff over the next 24 months, and have had plenty of interest from former Vestas employees already. The potential success of this venture undermines the argument put forward by the Danish firm last year that there was no market for British blade manufacturers for wind turbines.
Although the company received no government funding to start the business, they have had a very positive response from various businesses and individuals who have worked with Vestas in the past. In addition to this, Sean McDonagh, who is heading up operations at Sureblades, has informed interviewers that three or four people have been enquiring about job opportunities on a daily basis.
Heading the Sureblades firm are former Vestas employees Sean McDonagh, Keith Hunsell and Glynn Milton, alongside Penny Stout. The latter was a special adviser to Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, and so, has a valuable wealth of knowledge and experience in this area.
Wind Energy Becomes The Latest Victim of The Government Spending Review
Article by Harvey Mcewan
Approximately 60,000 proposed jobs will no longer be created as a result of the government's bid to clear the national deficit. Plans to build three factories which would produce large offshore wind turbines set out by the previous Labour administration have been set aside by the coalition.
The previous government had allocated
Engineering Jobs UK – Jobs in Engineering August 2009 Update
Article by Kimberly Jones
The engineering industry continues to display promising employment trends despite being in the cusp of the recession. During August 2009 opportunities for UK jobs in engineering continue to rise, especially within then Utilities and Rail sectors.
Engineering jobs in the Utility sector have been one of the key influences for the growth in job opportunities in the engineering industry. Firms such as Liverpool based water company United Utilities have contribute to the growth of engineering jobs in the UK, with prospective plans to line 350 meters of sewer tunnels in Merseyside. In addition to engineering jobs in Liverpool, the north-east of England maintains a strong position in producing jobs in engineering . It was announced that a new renewable energy plant will be created in Newcastle by Vertical Winde Energy a Northern-Ireland based energy firm. The plans for the new renewable energy plant will consist of a micro wind power generated system, which will undoubtedly generate a boost of employment opportunities in engineering for the people of Newcastle.
In addition to the promising growth of engineering jobs , the continued expansion of rail firm Network Rail is also contributing to the number of new engineering job opportunities in the UK, with the complex and specialized redevelopment of London's Blackfriars station.
However, the growth of jobs in the engineering industry has also been marred with the closure of engineering company Schlumberge, which will see 69 redundancies.
It is obvious to say there have been a number of casualties in the engineering industry due to the recession. However, despite these losses, the engineering industry as a whole continues to show signs of resilience. The overall outlook remains upbeat and optimistic. Prime Minister Gordon Brown's visit to Scotland to greet member companies of Scottish Engineering emphasized the encouraging signs for the continued growth of the engineering industry.
