Huron schools to install Wind turbine
It's an unusual gift, but definitly a gift of the future. A wind turbine will be installed to help the Huron City School district cut their energy bill in half. It will not only save the Sandusky-area school district money, but it will help students learn. "We have an opportunity for our students to be hands on with alternative energy which is one thing we're pushing in schools," said Superintendent Fred Fox. SUREnergy out of Sandusky actually donated the wind turbine to the district. They made the donation in memory of a family member who passed away. It is a generous donation that in turn produces hands-on learning. "To have an actual turbine being erected right now and turning, they'll be able to get in the classroom and see how many kilowatts it produces each day and keep track," Fox said. "The technology is tremendous." SUREnergy, which is selling personal wind turbines for home owners in greater Toledo,

Skystream Home Wind Turbine Review
Article by Roger Brown
-Skystream makes home wind turbine kits.
This type of kit is a great way to partially or completely power your home. It is unlikely that you can get away with using one wind turbine to take care of the whole load at your house. It is completely realistic to expect to be able to power 1/3 of your home with a wind turbine. The rest, you can either use solar or power from the grid.
The Skystream 3.7 kit is a horizontal-axis wind generator. These generators need to be mounted 30 feet above the tree line in order to get the best wind. Theoretically, you can mount this type of wind turbine on your roof. But, then you can damage to your roof. Also, by mounting on the roof, your wind is typically more turbulent, so it is difficult to maximize electricity production.
The big question is, how much does it cost to buy and build a kit like this?
The kit itself is about ,000 installed for their smaller version - the 2.4 kW model. The basic unit will come with the basic components to make power for your home unless you specify otherwise. Rotor/hub, generator, and inverter. Since mounting is largely personal preference, you will need to supply the tower.
Although you will have all the parts necessary to make electricity, it is wise to get others involved to mount the system and make the final tie-in with your home's electricity grid. An experienced mechanical contractor can handle the installation of the windmill on the tower and an electrical contractor can do the final tie-in.
there is currently an incentive to get a Skystream or any other wind turbine for your home in form of a 30% federal tax credit available. The great thing about a credit is it comes right off your tax bill - not like a deduction which just reduces taxable income.
On a scale of 1-10, how difficult is the Skystream wind turbine to put together and install?
If you are handy around the house with other projects, you won't have a problem putting the Skystream kit together. You need to make sure you get help with the installation.
A wind turbine kit itself is a very reasonable thing for the average do it yourselfer.
How can you mess things up with your Skystream?
The biggest mistake folks make is trying to do the whole installation. That is a tall order unless you are a combination mechanical contractor and electrician.
Contact Skystream and talk to the closest dealer about how best to get your kit installed.
What makes Skystream wind turbines different than competing products?
For starters, a very aesthetically pleasing design - very futuristic.
The real difference is all the components are put together in the turbine housing.
Who are their key competitors?
WindEnergy7 and Windspot are two manufacturer that have a large share of the market.
Skystream units have been chosen by a number of schools as part of the government's "Wind for America" program.
No matter which home wind turbine you buy, it is important to do your homework carefully. All wind is not created equal.
Check government wind resource maps, then, drill-down to your local community and check with your local weather office or TV station for information about average winds over time - you want to make sure you have enough wind to justify the upfront cost.

Do I Have Enough Wind For Wind Turbine Power?
Article by Roger Brown
Getting wind turbine power for your home can be an investment that pays for itself with FREE energy for life.
All you have to do is maintain the system, which is only a few hundred dollars a year.
The benefits of owning wind power at home are clear:
1. Offset electricity costs
2. Take yourself off the grid
3. Help Green the planet
However, at current prices for home wind turbines (up to ,000 for a kit), it is wise to correctly analyze local wind conditions and adjust your expectations about how much energy you can really make before you get started.
The best way to confirm your local wind is to start with the the state you are in, then your local community, and finally zero-in on the conditions in your backyard:
1. Look online at the "government's wind map"
The strongest steady wind occurs in the middle of the country. That being said, you can still have effective power producing wind turbines in other areas, as well. So, if it doesn't look strong enough at that level, keep looking As prices decline, as more are built, even areas with very low winds will be good areas to use windmills. But for now, you need to make sure there is enough wind to at least produce an average 9 mph.
2. Check your local community's weather service or a local tv station for seasonal and daily wind patterns
Does your community have patterns of wind that are 9 mph on average? Are winds seasonal or do their records indicate enough wind will be available year round to power your turbine. Check out statistics by month and make sure there is enough wind to harvest for the type of wind turbine you are considering.
3. Get an anemometer to check the wind at your house
If these first two items check out ok, then buying an anemometer to check winds at your house is the final step to validate a wind turbine for your home. Anemometers aren't that expensive - less than and you can get them - old school analog and digital - at Amazon.
Track your wind over several days each week for a month. Does the information you are gathering concur with the records from your local wind/weather source?
It is great to want to get wind turbine power and it may be the perfect solution to power your home for FREE. Just take the time to take the pulse of your available resources and you will be on a firm foundation for proceeding with your windmill.

EcoStyle School Wind Turbine Kit
The EcoStyle Wind Turbine Kit is used in schools to demonstrate how electricity is produced from the wind. Easy and fun to use, students can use the wind turbine to power motor, LED and buzzer modules, or connect it to the voltmeter. Students can experiment with different numbers of blades (2, 3 or 6), change the blade angle, and change the gearing (3 gear ratios to choose from). Use indoors with a fan, or outdoors in the wind.
